Teacher Voice - Powerful Practice - Evidence Informed Math TeachingEach newsletter we will highlight the voice of educators within Colorado to share some of their amazing work and ideas. In this issue, we are catching up with a Colorado educator, Carla Hass, who engaged in the CDE Course Powerful Practice - Evidence Informed Math Teaching. Practical Practices - Happy Birthday Principles to ActionIn our Practical Practices section of the newsletter, we highlight practices that you can incorporate in your classrooms, including curated links to outside resources to build your knowledge of that practice. Since Principles to Actions was first published in 2014, it has offered guidance to teachers, mathematics coaches, administrators, parents, and policymakers. This Limited 10th Anniversary Edition commemorates 10 years of useful and actionable guidance to educators as we work to strengthen the teaching and learning of school mathematics for each and every student. This year CCTM will elevate the Teaching Practices and resources to support that practice in the classroom within each newsletter. This month we will focus on Establish Math Goals to Focus Learning. Spotlighting Colorado Mathematics Educators and Teams:This section of our newsletter allows us to recognize the amazing mathematics teams, educators, and leaders in our community. This month we want to spotlight First Grade Teacher, Celina Arguello, from Center Colorado - Celina has done a tremendous amount of work around culturally responsive and culturally sustaining lessons - from using math to make tortillas with her students to playing hopscotch where students find the math in the fun! Please click here to read more about this amazing educator. Our spotlighted teacher will receive a care package of teacher goodies as well as CCTM shirts or Water Bottles! If you want to nominate an educator, leader, or team, please use the following form. Those selected to be featured in the spotlight will receive an educational care package (and the person nominating will also receive a care package). Use this link to nominate an individual or a team! Trivia - A History of MathematicsEach newsletter will have a trivia question. From those that answer correctly, five winners will be drawn and receive a CCTM Promotional Product. THIS MONTH’s TRIVIA QUESTION: This Bolivian was awarded the Presidential Medal of Excellence and was inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame. In 2016, the U.S. Postal Service honored him with a stamp. Who are they? Last month, we asked you, the members of CCTM “Which famous 20th-century mathematician, largely self-taught and originating from India, made profound contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions, and is known for his remarkable formulas related to pi and his intuitive grasp of deep properties of numbers, even though he had almost no formal training in pure mathematics? The answer to this question was: Srinivasa Ramanujan Learn more about Ramanujan Last month’s winners were:
Colorado Math Teacher Journal - Featured ArticleFeatured Article: Engaging Students With the Fold-and-Cut Theorem Authors: Amélie Schinck-Mikel and Elsa Medina, Cal Poly State University Abstract: When students make geometric constructions through paper folding, it allows them to make geometric concepts come to life in their hands. In this article, we discuss a hands-on geometry activity based on the Fold-and-Cut Theorem that can help teachers enhance students’ engagement with geometry and deepen students’ geometric reasoning by paper folding.
